Recently Marley mentioned Buddhism in her comment as a religion with very beautiful attributes. And her comment reminded us about our last trip when we spent several days in one of most beautiful Russian republics: Kalmykia! We just fall in love with this big beautiful and sparsely populated country! Today we want to share with you a beautiful and very interesting video about Kalmykia.
Kalmykia is the only Buddhist republic on European territory, and the Kalmyks follow the Tibetan branch of the religion. In the Soviet period most of their temples were destroyed; those that survive are treasured by locals. Founded in the 1860s, the capital Elista is a small city with a population of just 130,000 people:
I wish we could spend more days and I hope we will be back there again!

Just wanted to tell that we think the best time to visit Kalmykia is April when they have incredible site of prairie with thousand tulips growing wild there!
And by the way they have incredible drink Kalmykian tea (with milk and salt)... that was so good but we never could find it again!
So tell us if you go there and we accompany you or just ask to bring us this delicious drink! ;)

This is really amazing region of Russia! Not to many Russians even consider it as a tourist destination. As I understand you got to go there. Can you please tell more about your traveling experience and logistics of where you stayed and how you traveled there?

ReplyDeleteWe traveled Kalmykia April, 2008 - that was really no need to go there.
But we love to travel! So after we left Russia for Ukraine (cause of visa issue) and then were going back to Russia we chose an interesting rout: Kerch-Gelengik-Sochi and then back to Moscow Sochi-Maykop-Armavir-Stavropol'-Elista(the capital of Kalmykia)-Volgograd-Moskva. We traveled by our Volga 2410 and stayed in cheap hotels: in Elista we stayed at hotel "Elista" and they registrated Kyle without any problems.
Kalmykia is really very unique region and we enjoyed our travel there very very much!
Would recommend to visit Kalmykia to everybody!
