Vancouver 2010: Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov (Video)!

The fourth place in Olypmic Games is not too good result for this couple of figure skaters (Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov). Russian newspaper "Soviet Sport" asked Yuko Kavaguti about their plans.

"Just before the last competition Tamara Nikolaevna [their trainer Tamara Moskvina] told me: 'Please, skate beautifully. Show them your soul.' I could not..."

"I am going to skate for a while. World Championship in Turin? Probably, yes. Olympics in Sochi? I do not know ..."

Yuko Kavaguti will be 32 years old and Alexander Smirnov will be 30 years old in the year of Olympic in Sochi.

Yuko you were the best and you expressed your beautiful soul - we've all seen it!

  1. I agree, I'm from Brazil and I never paid any attention to figure skating, this week, after watching the figure skating performances I was amazed, I had never heard of any pair, and I saw almost all the performances, but after seeing yuko/alexander's performance (the swan)...I had a favorite pair! I was like: (ah! her costume is the most beautiful and she looks like a cute child! but then I saw them in action...they're great!) I was amazed how the cute and gracious yuko and the strong and talented alexander could dance on ice, no matter if they didn't get any medal, everyone could see they are top sakaters. and I REALLY hope to see them in sochi, if I could I would travel to Russia just to see them.

  2. Fourth place may not be the greatest. But it certainly was not the worst. Why should Yuko apologize? What about the other Russian pairs that finished even lower? Maria Mukhortova and Maxim Trankov finished in seventh place while Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov placed eleventh. Have these pairs apologized for not winning a medal

Just think how world champion Michelle Kwan must have felt in not being able to win the Olympic gold medal. Germany's Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szokowy, the reigning world champions, must have felt somewhat disappointed at now winning the gold.

Everyone has an off day. Perhaps Kavaguti and Smirnov would have scored higher if not for that fall. There is a Japanese saying: Even a monkey will slip off the tree. What this means is even experts will mess up.

Face it just being able to make it to the Olympics should be considered an honor.
